Mysore Rasam Recipe: A Traditional Delight

Mysore Rasam – Specialty & Origin

Mysore Rasam is a famous South Indian dish that hails from the cultural heartland of Karnataka. Known for its rich, bold flavors and perfectly balanced spice profile, Mysore Rasam offers a tangy, spicy kick with aromatic undertones. Traditionally served with rice or sipped as a broth, this rasam is a must-have comfort food for any occasion.

Health Benefits

Mysore Rasam is not only delicious but also nutritious. The combination of toor dal and tamarind provides a rich source of protein and antioxidants. Tamarind helps in detoxification, while spices like cumin and turmeric aid digestion, boost immunity, and provide anti-inflammatory benefits. The warmth of garlic and curry leaves also promotes better respiratory health.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Toor Dal (Pigeon Peas)
  • 1 medium Tomato, chopped
  • 2-3 Garlic Cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp Tamarind Paste
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1-2 tbsp True Traditions Mysore Rasam Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • A pinch of Hing (Asafoetida)
  • 10-12 Curry Leaves
  • 2 tbsp Oil or Ghee
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves for garnish
  • Salt to taste

Recipe:

  1. Cook the Dal:
Rinse the toor dal thoroughly and cook it in a pressure cooker with 2-3 cups of water until soft and mushy. Once done, mash the dal lightly.

  2. Prepare the Rasam Base:
In a pot, heat oil or ghee and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds, hing, and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds, then add the minced garlic and tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes soften.

  3. Add Spices:
Add True Traditions Mysore Rasam Powder and turmeric to the mixture. Stir and cook for 2-3 minutes until the spices release their aroma.

  4. Mix Dal and Tamarind:
Add the mashed dal and tamarind paste to the pot. Adjust the consistency with water (rasam can be thin or thick depending on preference). Bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes.

  5. Garnish and Serve:
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with rice or enjoy as a spicy, tangy soup!
